Loved this presentation! Can you give more details on how to run FLDIGI using a tablet?
John Jacob,
Thank you so much for this presentation. It really helped me connect a lot of dots. I’m studying for my Technician license at present and hope to have it by early September. If I pass, I’ll also take the General test, which I’m studying for as well. What would be really helpful is to know the specific contents of the kit you mentioned right toward the end of this presentation. A video maybe? Which shortwave radio? Which solar panel? Which battery pack? Also, it was hard to follow what you were talking about with the Anderson adapters.
Thank you. This was a very popular presentation with many requests for some visuals for those who were not present. Right after T-Rex I will be doing just that. I’ll be taking portions of that presentation and turning them into videos. The Shortwave Radio was a Tecsun PL-880, but the PL-660 is $40 cheaper and does JUST as good. More to come.
Very informative! The part on the NVIS antenna made me understand it for my General test.
Excited to see the videos as well! I had the same questions as ROMEO LIMA-06. Id love to see the kit specifics. Im trying to get my BOB radio setup figured out. Taking my Technician test next Saturday.
JJS,
What is the make & model of the tablet you are using? Have you had any functionality/performance issues? Also, what are your thoughts on the size of the tablet?
I personally have a Dell Venue Pro 8.1 I love the size of it, as I can literally stuff it in a cargo pocket. It uses a 5v USB plug-in charging cable, so it really sips power. I wouldn’t recommend it as a primary digital comms platform however, only because of it’s small size, which is difficult to read and navigate (I have large hands/fingers). There really is nothing like a full-size screen and keyboard for normal, day-to-day digital use. But for ‘on the go’, field-portable ops, the tablets with the Windows operating systems can’t be beat, especially for the price.
In the article intro to comms and amrron for the God and country rally, it reads like there is info on a 90 minute presentation that tells about amrron, networking, grid up/grid down etc. I have not been able to find this on this site. Is it avialible? Thank you for all you do…
Is anyone having issues with Windows 10 and any of the Digi programs…
Windows 10 is reportedly plagued with all sorts of issues. One of the Partisan Radio episodes briefly talked about a source for a fix to some of the issues.
I’m trying to organize a local CPT group and COM training is our weakest area. A written summary or video along the lines of your ‘Introduction to Comms’ presentation would be VERY helpful. A lot of us in the East Tennessee mountains live in “hollers” that limit GMRS/FRC range to less than a mile (i.e., not very useful without repeaters which seem problematic anyway). Do you think a summary/video is likely anytime soon?
I’ll put it on the list. Thanks!
