Book to of the Partisan Operator Journals;  the dystopian novel series that emphasizes communications.

Where the PoJ Vol 1 begins one year after the catastrophic ‘Zero Day’ event, Volume 2 takes the reader back to Zero Day, when it all began.

Kirsten Macallan, a college-aged young woman and Army Reserve medic, is attending a Christian college in Alabama, 2,000 miles from home when Zero Day hits.

She suddenly finds herself in a complete grid-down situation, separated from everyone she loves and trusts.

With her family living in the Pacific Northwest, and her Active Duty Army fiance’ deployed to California for a field training exercise, she is forced to make agonizing decisions. Equipped with a bicycle and a trailer, a pistol and a rifle and survival gear her dad insisted she kept, she has to make a choice. Does she try to make it to Ft. Benning, Georgia in hopes of meeting up with her fiance’, or does she try to make her way to Ft. Campbell, Kentucky to report to her Army Reserve unit where they must surely be needing people.

Although she has a Baofeng handheld radio, and a Technician ham license, she struggled to remember everything her dad tried to teach her about using it. Kirsten has to adapt to the new world that she is now living in, and learns how ugly society can turn, and so quickly.

Through a series of events and misadventures, she meets people that are helpful and protective, and those who would take advantage of her vulnerability, and she has to learn quickly how to discern the difference.

Fortunately, through the people she would meet, she would learn how to use her radio communications gear, and acquire more equipment and knowledge along the way, including befriending a ham operator who helps her send a message back home to her family.

Eventually she makes contact with a Special Forces team, setting her on an unexpected course, and a mission she never could have imagined (you’ll discover how that unfolds). The book ends with the real adventure just beginning.

Unlike PoJ Volume 1, book 2 takes a slightly different approach, with the main character not being highly knowledgeable about radio communications. Although she had a baseline knowledge, it was never important to her until now. She is exposed to radio operators and communications capabilities unfamiliar to her, and learned to adopt the skills necessary to make contact with her family.

Hopefully you enjoy the fictional story and it keeps your interest, as well as (just SOME of) the real radio techniques and capabilities that exist, and how they might be used in a real-world grid down scenario.

The PoJ is intended to be readable to most all audiences with an interest in dystopian fiction, but especially of interest to those of us who lean heavily toward radio communications in a disaster/civil defense environment.

Hopefully The Partisan Operator Journals reaffirm those who already get it, and plants some seeds for others who’ve never considered how invaluable communications can become when nothing else works.

Enjoy!
