“The Ukrainian Defense Forces hit multiple Russian military assets on Friday, striking a mesh-network repeater used to coordinate “Shahed” drone attacks…”
Good lesson patriots! Yes, this does reinforce what we’ve all said when asked “Can’t these be tracked” or “can’t these be DF’d?” YES! Anything that emits a signal can (eventually, and often quickly) be tracked down. That’s why TTPs adapt to the environment, the threat model, and the tactical situation on the ground.
If your adversary has advanced electronic warfare and strike capabilities, you better adapt the way you operate comms. However, this doesn’t mean you dismiss a highly effective comms tool that is helping us during wildfires, hurricanes, search and rescue, or will be helpful in an otherwise SHTF environment.
You use it until you can’t, and if someone wants to spent $5.2 million sending a missile to take out your $100 repeater, you just put up another one (and adapt your tactics to make it more difficult for them to interdict it next time).
