Good job 👍🏽
That Maritime Radio Historical Society crypto broadcast was a hoot. Operators will often practice the various elements involved, but rarely do you get a chance to work the complete process live. I’ve also used the 900Mhz Meshtastic LoRa devices for some time, and am impressed. They fill a unique niche.
We here on the Chesapeake Bay participated in the MHRS (radiomarine.org) Cold War ‘numbers station’ event. It was fun. A real trip down memory lane for us old Cold Warriors. The KPH Morse signal to the Est coast, on the shore of The Chesapeake Bay was QRK4 on 22 MHz and though loud on 17 Mc band, there was QRM exactly on frequency from two sources:
1. Un-known erratic Morse
2. The long path, round-the-world back signal with time delay from KPH.
That’s right, kids, their signal was SO good, that I heard it both short path (with delay) and long path from KPH Bolinas, California at the same time. There is a reason that KPH was known as “The Powerhouse of The Pacific”. Easy copy of the 15 groups per minute , hand sent Morse, made for 100% ‘cryptographic quality” copy using my #2 pencil on paper: no back doors, no leaking BlueTooth and Wifi emissions, no slow-to-boot PC that remembers everything…
I decrypted the message with little difficulty, though their procedures and preamble was a bit different from legacy systems I remember, but it all worked and the clear text has been submitted to the e-mail address provided. Perhaps I shall win the much coveted and semi-apocryphal “Red Banner of Gloating” to hang above >>> The People’s Radio Transceiver? <<<
