What is the order of priority to set up data/digital modes for AmRRON operations?
This question comes up often from new AmRRON operators. This video is designed to help the newer operator understand the primary digital mode software, in order of priority to download and set up each. Fldigi – Flmsg – Flamp (and custom forms) JS8Call – Commstat.
This video will direct the new AmRRON operator to the most relevant website postings to get set up and running.
Get your comms up!
Outstanding: nice overview, well done, clear and easy to understand. I think most people will be able to stumble through the FLDigi modes and JS8Call, but Commstat might be a bit too much. Time permitting, a dedicated video on that attachment might be worthwhile.

We put the Commstat setup vid on hold while we address the setup process. It works for many, without issue. But there are some OSs (Win10, I believe?) experiencing various issues getting Commstat to to install and function properly, as of this date. The developer is looking for a solution, and testing.
Many thanks!
One thing I often find with new hams or new users of applications like FlDigi is the issue of rig control. Is it needed or isn’t it? What exactly does it do? Why do I need it (or not)? Can I run FlDigi without rig control (whether FlRig, HamLib, or whatever)? On the new advisory video, no mention of rig control is mentioned and no rig control application is suggested, which suggests that it is not needed — yet K4REF suggests in his videos that rig control *is* needed. Perhaps a short White Paper on the topic might be useful, or as an addition in the next SOI update.

The primary purpose of the video was to guide the new operator on the order of priority (the sequence) for which digital mode software to set up.
Whether one “needs” rig control depends on each operator’s setup and equipment, and often preference.
One does not need sound control with many radios, but it can be an optional way of running. Some radios aren’t set up to use rig control, while with others, rig control must be used.
If using VOX, and an external sound card such as a Signalink, one does not need to use rig control.
Rig control is an option for activating/transmitting radios with built in sound cards, and for controlling the frequency and other settings, by use of a USB cable which goes from the computer directly to the radio. One very common program for this is Flrig.
When the frequency in the Rig Control software is changed (or a saved setting clicked on), it automagically changes the frequency on the radio, and displays that frequency in fldigi as well.
More to follow on that.
Much appreciated video. I’ve had only submarginal success receiving a full message.(never actually) with Fldigi. / Flamp. And rig control on JS8 always produces an error. So it has not worked.
So I will go back thru all these links and diligently check everything again.
Thanks for posting.
Very well done. Thank you
