TIPS FOR SUCCESSFULLY PARTICIPATING IN AmRRON DIGITAL NETS

If you are new to digital modes, you can learn more about getting started with fldigi at https://amrron.com/2017/03/23/fldigi-tutorials-videos/

  • Be sure to turn off beacons/heartbeats/sounders in other digital mode applications ten minutes prior to the start of the scheduled net
  • Start fldigi first, then start flamp and flmsg
  • Turn RxID on (green) in upper right-hand corner of your fldigi program.  Turn TxID off.
  • Set your ‘Sweet Spot’ on your waterfall to 1000 (in fldigi, select ‘Configure’ button at the top > Select ‘Config Dialogue’ > Select ‘Misc’ > Select ‘Sweet Spot’.  Edit the field labeled ‘PSK et al.’ to 1000.  This will place your selector at 1000 on the waterfall by default when you start fldigi or change modes.
  • These nets are controlled nets (unlike the Persistent Presence Net).  Follow instructions of the NCS (Net Control Station) and/or ANCS (Assistant Net Control Station).
  • FLAMP block fills
    • Only report missing blocks if you are missing five or fewer blocks (others reporting missing blocks will usually result in filling many of your missing blocks when NCS or a relay station is sending block fills).
    • Do not ask for block fills if you are missing the majority of the blocks.  Wait for a relay station with a better path to you than the sending station, and often this will happen after the close of the scheduled net.
    • All available stations are encouraged to stay on frequency after the net closes to relay traffic to other stations who have a better path than the original sending station.
    • When sending net traffic to others (such as after the close of the net, for example) move up or down a couple kHz if practical, where others with a good path to you can follow you, freeing up the main frequency for other coordination and relaying.  Make an announcement that you will move to x.xxx MHz to relay the traffic.
    • When sending net traffic to others using flamp, always try to ‘Relay’ the traffic from your Receive pane in flamp.  This will keep the four-digit/character Queue identifier the same, and will result in more efficient transfer of each file, minimizing multiple versions of the same file being sent.
