As we approach hurricane season and Tropical Storm Erika threatens to turn into a hurricane with a full-frontal assault predicted for Florida, ham radio is abuzz. Operators will be standing by to keep us informed, relay for help, and provide communications when portions of the grid go down, as they’re sure to do.
Two great resources to track the storm and related traffic are:
Hurricane Watch Net on http://www.hwn.org/
…and the Maritime Mobile Service Network 14.300 MHz USB
You SHOULD at least have a shortwave receiver with Single Sideband (SSB). But if you’re slacking and only have the internet, you can listen to the live streaming 14.300 net at http://14300.net/avlinks.html
Or, for licensed ham operators, listen to 14.300 on Echolink Node: NN2NN-L
AND THERE’S MORE!
